Adults Use of Internet [Study]

85% Of Adults Use The Internet For Email While 62% Use It For Social Networking

It looks like Email isn’t dead after all. A new survey conducted by Ipsos found that not only is email well and truly alive, it is still the reason most adults (at least) go onto the web.

Ipsos questioned 19,216 adults in 24 countries for the study and found that 85% of all adults who use the internet do so in order to access email. By contrast, only 62% of those adult users logged on for social networking. Keren Gottfried, research manager at Ipsos wasn’t surprised by the findings. According to her, “If you think about it, the Internet was first used for sending letters online. It shouldn’t be surprising that we’re using a digital version of sending a letter,” she says. “But the fact that a majority of people are using [the Internet] for social networking is a paradigm shift; there’s no equivalent in the offline world.”

The Ipsos survey found that internet use of email and social networking varied by country. Japan and Saudi Arabia were very low relatively low social network users, clocking in at 35 and 42% respectively. Most Hungarians (94%) use the internet for email. Ipsos’ findings underscore the continued importance of email in today’s media and communications landscape. Those people writing its obituary need to come again.
